In a significant blow to billionaire Narayana Murthy and his tech company Infosys, the firm has been hit with a record Rs 238 crore (over $3.3 million) fine in the United States over allegations of immigration fraud. This marks the largest case of its kind in the country.
The US authorities accused Infosys of violating visa regulations by using B-1 visitor visas for its workers instead of the more regulated H-1B visas. This alleged practice allowed the company to bypass stricter wage and immigration requirements, giving Infosys a competitive edge by keeping labour costs lower.
The charges claim that Infosys's actions undermined fair labour practices and compromised the integrity of the US immigration system. In response, Infosys has agreed to settle the case for Rs 283 crore and has committed to stricter compliance measures to prevent future violations.
While Infosys has not admitted to any wrongdoing, the settlement serves as a reminder to corporations about the importance of adhering to international legal standards.
