Karnataka's political landscape is currently embroiled in controversy as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has been granted permission for prosecution by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot in connection with an alleged land scam involving the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). This decision follows a complaint from RTI activist T.J. Abraham, raising serious questions about land allocation practices under Siddaramaiah's previous administration.
Understanding the MUDA Scam
The MUDA scam centers on allegations of irregularities in land allotments, particularly under a controversial 50:50 scheme. This scheme was designed to compensate landowners whose properties were acquired for development by allocating them half of the developed land. Critics claim that the scheme was manipulated, resulting in significant financial losses for the MUDA and the state government, with estimates of the scam's value ranging from ₹1,000 crore to ₹5,000 crore.
Allegations Against Siddaramaiah
The allegations specifically implicate Siddaramaiah's wife, Parvathi, who reportedly benefitted from these irregularities. In 2021, MUDA acquired a 3.16-acre plot of land owned by Parvathi in Kesare village for development purposes. In return, she was allocated 14 plots in the upscale Vijayanagar area of Mysuru, which are believed to have a significantly higher market value than her original land. This has raised concerns about the legitimacy of the land transfers and the potential misuse of power.
Political Fallout and Legal Battle
In response to the Governor's decision, Siddaramaiah has vehemently denied the allegations, asserting that the prosecution is politically motivated. He described the situation as a "conspiracy" orchestrated by opposition parties, including the BJP and JD(S), to destabilize his government. Siddaramaiah stated, "I have done nothing wrong to warrant a resignation," and pledged to fight the allegations both legally and politically.
On August 19, 2024, Siddaramaiah filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court challenging the Governor's sanction for prosecution. The court is expected to hear the case shortly, as the political tensions continue to escalate. Meanwhile, the Congress party has rallied behind Siddaramaiah, organizing protests against what they perceive as a misuse of the Governor's office for political vendetta.
