In the world of food delivery, Zomato and Swiggy have reigned supreme, satisfying all our cravings with just a few clicks. But a new player has entered the game, and it's shaking things up.
Meet ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce), a govt-owned platform that's challenging the dominance of the big two.
Will ONDC kill the big two?
Here’s what you need to know!
What is ONDC?
Launched in late 2021 under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), ONDC enables consumer-facing enterprises to access technologies and solutions used by e-commerce platforms, including listing, order management, and delivery.
The ONDC is aimed at bringing together buyers and sellers of a wide range of goods and services on one open network.
After beta testing in Bengaluru across 16 pin codes in Sept 2022, the ONDC platform has gone live in multiple cities where consumers can order food and groceries
Another UPI-like revolution!
ONDC aims to transform India's e-commerce landscape using open protocols and open-source specifications.
Similar to UPI, which allows seamless payments between bank accounts through various apps, ONDC enables users to order goods online from a variety of sellers across different apps.
Why is ONDC cheaper?
The USP of the ONDC is that it lets restaurants sell food directly to consumers without the need for a third party (like Zomato and Swiggy).
One of the main reasons users are flocking to ONDC is its affordability compared to Swiggy and Zomato. While Swiggy and Zomato charge a 25-30% commission from restaurants on every order, ONDC charges only a 2-4% commission.
This lower commission allows restaurants to offer better prices to customers.
In addition, ONDC is currently running a promotion offering discounts to early users, making it even more appealing to consumers.
How can you use ONDC?
ONDC is not a separate app that you can download from Play Store or App Store.
Instead, ONDC works like UPI, which means it can be added to existing apps like--Paytm, PhonePe and Meesho, etc.
ONDC has now more than 29,000 sellers that are selling 36 lakh plus products
One can use ONDC via the Paytm app. Go to the Paytm app and type 'ONDC' on the search bar. Now you can order food from the restaurant through ONDC.
It must be noted that not all restaurants are selling food through this platform as it is relatively new.
