Reliance Jio, the disruptive force in the Indian telecom market, has recently announced a 25% price hike on their prepaid and postpaid plans. This move has sparked a debate among consumers and industry experts alike, with some accusing the Ambanis of using the price hike to fund Anant Ambani's lavish wedding.

Jio's Impact on the Indian Telecom Landscape

Jio's entry in 2016 revolutionized the Indian telecom industry by offering free 4G data, unlimited calls, and a host of other services for an entire year. Prior to Jio's arrival, the market leader Airtel was charging 259 rupees for just 1GB of 4G data, and 455 rupees for 3GB. Jio's aggressive pricing and bundled services quickly made them the most affordable option in the market.

Jio's Plans Remain Competitive Post-Hike

Even after the recent price hike, Jio's plans continue to be the most affordable in the market. For a 28-day plan with 1.5GB/day, unlimited calls, and SMS, Jio charges ₹299, while Airtel and Vodafone-Idea charge 17% and 20% more respectively. For an 84-day plan with the same benefits, Jio's price of ₹799 is 7.5% lower than Airtel and Vodafone-Idea ₹859.

Jio's Contribution to India's Digital Revolution

Jio's disruptive entry has been a significant contributor to India's digital revolution. In 2016, only 16.5% of the population was actively using the internet, which has now grown to over 55%. Jio's efforts in expanding internet access and affordability for the masses cannot be overlooked.

Subscriber Growth and Data Consumption

At the end of FY 17 (six months after launch), Jio had 11 crore subscribers, which has now grown to almost 50 crore, the highest in India. Within six months of Jio's launch, India became the top mobile data user across the world, consuming over 1 billion GB of data every month, compared to 200 million GB earlier. In just two years, active internet users in India almost doubled, reaching 29% in 2018.

While the recent price hike has drawn criticism, it is important to recognize Jio's pivotal role in transforming the Indian telecom landscape. As the market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Jio and its competitors respond to the changing dynamics. Regardless of the price hike, Jio's plans remain the most affordable in the market, and their contribution to India's digital revolution is undeniable.
