On August 18, 2023, Bangladesh's Yunus Government made a controversial decision by releasing Jashimuddin Rahmani, the leader of the Al-Qaeda-linked Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), which is banned in India. This release has raised significant alarm bells in India, particularly regarding the potential for increased jihadi activities in the region.
Rahmani's Provocative Statements
Just days after his release, Rahmani made alarming statements, calling for support from Pakistan and Afghanistan to establish a jihadi network in India. He specifically urged for Jammu and Kashmir's independence and even challenged West Bengal's Chief Minister to declare freedom from "Modi’s rule." His comments in a video, from what looks like a hospital room have gone viral on social media and YouTube and could be a dangerous escalation in rhetoric against India.
In a video, Rahmani warned, “I am warning India…Bangladesh is not like Sikkim or Bhutan. It is a country of 18 crore Muslims…If you take a step towards Bangladesh, we will tell China to close the chicken’s neck [Siliguri corridor]. We will tell the Seven Sisters [Northeastern states] to join the freedom movement.” He further declared, “Tell Kashmir to get ready for freedom. Pakistan and Afghanistan together will help Kashmir gain independence. We will work for the freedom of Kashmir.”
But wait, who is Jashimuddin Rahmani?
Jashimuddin Rahmani is a convicted terrorist, previously sentenced for the 2013 murder of blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider. Known as the so-called ‘spiritual leader’ of the ABT, he has been implicated in numerous attacks against bloggers, writers, and LGBTQ+ activists in Bangladesh. His group, which preaches violence against those deemed anti-Islam, was banned in 2016 but has seen a resurgence since his release.
Reportedly, his sermons talk about how killing those against Islam and Prophet Mohammad is ‘legal’.
Threats of Retaliation If Challenged
Rahmani did not stop at mere provocations; he issued a stark warning about potential retaliation. He stated, “If we are challenged, if we are neglected, if chaos is created in our country, then the Tawhid population of Bangladesh, just like it has risen against [Sheikh] Hasina, will unite to face you in the field.” He ominously added, “The day is not far when your country too will be broken and the flags of the Tawhid will flutter above Delhi.”
Rising Terrorism Under Yunus
The release of Rahmani is part of a broader trend under the Yunus government, which has freed several terrorists previously jailed under Sheikh Hasina's administration. This includes lifting bans on terrorist outfits like Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh (JI) and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir. The interim government’s leniency towards these groups has raised concerns about the resurgence of terrorism in Bangladesh, which could spill over into India.
Should India Be Worried?
Rahmani’s release and subsequent statements pose a significant threat to India's national security. The potential for increased jihadi activity, especially in regions like Jammu and Kashmir, is concerning. The Indian government must remain vigilant as these developments unfold.
The release of Jashimuddin Rahmani is a stark reminder of the fragility of security in the region. His calls for jihad and threats against India highlight the potential for escalating violence. As Bangladesh grapples with its own internal challenges, the implications of such releases extend beyond its borders, posing a serious risk to India's stability and security as terrorists roam freely.
The situation demands close monitoring and a robust response from Indian authorities to counter any emerging threats. Is India ready for the challenge posed by them?
