The war between Hamas fighters of Gaza and Israel entered a fourth day. The death toll for both sides mounted to over 1,100 as Israel retaliated to Hamas' deadliest attack via air-water-land on Israel.
But why did the US enter the war between Israel and Gaza? Let’s find out
US citizens killed
The US said on Sunday that several American citizens were killed in the surprise land-sea-air attack on Israel by the Palestine group Hamas.
"We can confirm the deaths of several US citizens," a spokesperson for the US National Security Council said, as quoted by news agency AFP. "We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and to the families of all those affected."
US enters the war
Following the attack, US President Joe Biden ordered the deployment of US ships and warplanes to Israel on Sunday, signaling Washington's "unwavering" support for its ally in the face of escalating attacks by Hamas.
The Pentagon said it was sending the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford and a guided missile cruiser and four guided missile destroyers.
What does Hamas have to say?
Hamas accused the United States, a major arms supplier to Israel, of complicity in the "aggression against our people" by deploying the aircraft carrier.
The death count from the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has passed 1,100, with over 700 killed in Israel and at least 400 killed in Gaza.
Israel orders complete seizure
Israel escalated measures against the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip to a "total blockade" including a ban on admitting food and fuel.
Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Monday ordered a "complete siege" on the Gaza Strip and said, "We're fighting animals and acting accordingly. We are putting a complete siege on Gaza... No electricity, no food, no water, no gas -- it's all closed."
